Monitoring Selective Withdrawal IJmuiden
Van Hattum en Blankevoort is constructing “Selective Withdrawal” in IJmuiden on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. Due to the new sea lock, more saltwater flows into the North Sea Canal. Saltwater has harmful effects on nature, agriculture, and process water. Selective withdrawal aims to counteract the increase in saltwater.
A structure, akin to a (saltwater) mailbox, is being installed in the Binnenspuikanaal of the lock complex in IJmuiden. Geovisie is responsible for monitoring the installation. The livestream can be followed below.
Since saltwater is denser than freshwater, it flows through an opening at the bottom of the structure back to the sea. The freshwater is retained and remains in the North Sea Canal.
